Technology Overview
In August 1997, a fixed direct fired thermal treatment facility specializing in the treatment of non-hazardous soils contaminated with MGP residuals opened in Vineland, New Jersey.
Pure Earth Recycling (NJ), Inc. has access to the most diversified commercial hazardous waste and contaminated soil facility operating in the Eastern United States. The facility, 22 acres in size, employs the use of a Low Temperature Thermal Desorber (LTTD) for the total treatment of contaminated soil, and the SRS SAREX System for the recycling of hazardous soils, oily water and sludges. The facility is located at a RCRA part B licensed hazardous waste disposal and oil recycling facility that has been operating since 1979.
During the facility's first two years of operation, more than 500,000 tons of non-hazardous soil (50% TPH and 50% MGP) generated from five states was treated to New Jersey residential direct cleanup levels. In July 1999, a second, indirect fired thermal unit came on line at this facility; this unit is dedicated to the thermal treatment of hazardous wastes including MGP residuals carrying D018 codes, refinery sludges and other hazardous petroleum distillate waste streams.
A total of 4,000 tons (both hazardous and non-hazardous) of contaminated soil generated from remediation activities at this site were treated, with approximately 15% of the soils treated through the indirect fired unit.
